Tutto il sapere a portata di mano

How to use the catalog

The Library’s catalog can be accessed from any PC with an Internet connection, using the following address:

Also see the FAQ regarding the catalog or write to:

Selecting a language

The catalog is available in Italian and English; to switch from one language to another, just click on the flags in the lower right corner on any page.
Choosing a language is linked to the catalog interface, not to bibliographic content, which is identical for both versions.

Simple search

The first type of search is a simple search:

Catalog simple search

Enter the search keywords (always leaving out articles and prepositions), selecting:

  • everywhere to search in all fields (author, title, notes)
  • title to search only in the title field
  • author to search only in the author field
  • subject to search only in the subject field

Five to fifty results can be selected, and can be ordered by year, relevance, title or author.

Advanced search

Another type of search is an advanced search, which allows you to enter additional terms and apply specific filters:

Catalog advanced search

  • enter the first search term, for example, law
  • select the appropriate filter to the right, for example, title
  • enter the second search term, for example, Bianca
  • select the appropriate filter to the right, for example, author

The catalog will search all documents with the word Law in the title and the name Bianca among the authors/editors.

Shortening words

Where the exact term is not known or if you would like to extend the search to all possible variants of a certain word, you can insert the word shortened by a few characters, without adding any jolly characters: entering econom, for example, will bring up economyeconomieseconomics, etc.

Use of boolean operators

  • AND (presence of both terms: A and B)
  • OR (presence of both terms or of at least one of the two: A and B, A, B)
  • OR NOT (presence of the terms A or B, but not of A and B together)
  • AND NOT (presence of the first term and exclusion of the second: A, but not B)

Use of facets

To further refine the search, one or more facets can be selected from those present to the right of the advanced search fields: publication datebibliographic levellanguageformatauthor (entity, person or conference) and subject (topic, entity, conference or geographical area).
The number of records relevant to that specific selection is reported in parentheses.

Search results

Results are presented in brief, showing only the essential data; for additional details (summary, notes) click on the title to view the extended format.

In the extended format you can see what copies the Library has; state indicates when the text will be available with the option of reserving copies that are not available because they have been lent out to other users:

Catalog reservation

while circulation indicates whether it is possible to borrow the item (in any case the item can be consulted during the day):

Catalog loan not allowed

Always pay careful attention to the bibliographic level; for:

  • monograph: books, multiple-volume works
  • chapter: a contribution to a book

the shelf mark appears in the extended record format, while for:

  • periodicals: magazines, newspapers, yearbooks or any periodical publication
  • article: a contribution to a periodical

check the search engine for periodicals to find the shelf mark of the periodical indicated (the Library catalog for this section is under revision).

Authenticated access

For all LUISS users, if you click on LOGIN at the top right of the page, you can access the catalog with a personalized profile that allows you to:

  • immediately reserve documents that are not available because they have already been taken out by other users
  • view documents on loan with their due dates
  • view reservations made and their possible fines

Students can gain access using their identification number/pin; other users need a username and password, which can be requested by emailing this address:
