Transformative agreements and incentives

Transformative agreements are transitional contracts based on the Read &Publish model negotiated between Institutions (Libraries, national and regional Consortia) and publishers that, in addition to access to journals, allow to publish open access, without further payment  of  fees, articles by authors belonging to the Institution who intend to publish their work this way.

In most cases, journals born completely open access do not require payment of APCs (Article Processing Charge that is publication costs).

"Traditional" publishers require the payment of APCs for their so-called "hybrid" journals, where you can publish open access articles. In this case the journal is still accessible only by subscription, but the single article can be Open Access by paying the APCs.

In this context, the transformative agreements intend to shift the expenditure of Institutions to access paid content towards that of publishing open access content, making it available to everyone and permanently. The costs established by this type of contract includes both access to journals and payment of APCs for authors belonging to the subscriber Institution, for an unlimited or pre-established number of articles.

Creative Commons CC-BY license or other Creative Commons  licenses usually apply to published articles and the authors retain the rights to the publication.

In the case of multiple authors, the option of open access publication without further payment is provided if the corresponding author is affiliated with the subscriber. In the case of multiple corresponding authors, the publisher considers the one who submits the article (submitter) to be corresponding.

Staff of the Library will verify and validate the request for publication in open access on the publishers’ platforms.

Luiss Library adheres, on behalf of the University, to some transformative agreements negotiated by CARE-CRUI  with the major international publishers starting from 2020.
