As part of its Third Mission social impact activities and in alignment with the goals of the 2030 Agenda, the Luiss Library has been promoting a Media and Information Literacy initiative for local schools since 2021. Now in its fifth edition for the 2025/2026 school year, the project aims to bring younger generations closer to the world of libraries, fostering a critical and conscious approach to research tools and source evaluation.
The activity consists of a two-hour session led by the library staff and is tailored for primary schools (grades 4 and 5) and lower secondary schools. The program features an educational presentation followed by a guided tour of the Library. Contents are adapted to the participants' age, ranging from the history of books and libraries to the use of search engines and online catalogs, and from fake news detection to Artificial Intelligence and the dynamics of "onlife" living.
Over the course of five editions, the Library has welcomed 1,178 students. When asked to sum up what a library meant to them in a single sentence, they shared a fresh yet profoundly insightful perspective:
- "It is commitment, study, and beauty." (12 years old)
- "A safe space where you can reflect." (9 years old)
- "An education for life." (9 years old)
- "It is a place of mindfulness and respect for others." (11 years old)
- "It is a kind of togetherness." (10 years old)
- "A privilege for everyone." (10 years old)
- "The library is a point of reference." (10 years old)
- "A place where differences don't matter." (10 years old)
- "A magical, quiet, and highly creative place." (10 years old)
