The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted on the 25th of September 2015 by the governments of the 193 UN member countries. It presents a “plan of action for people, planet and prosperity” to be carried out by the year 2030, aiming to "free the human race from the tyranny of poverty" and "heal and secure our planet”. The Agenda incorporates 17 Sustainable Development Goals, divided into targets which refer to different fields of the economic, environmental and social development.
The program represents a global challenge that involves all of society, thus libraries have a seminal role to play. IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) participated as a UN partner in the creation of the 2030 Agenda with the support of several library organisations. In 2014, AIB (Italian Library Association) signed The Lyon Declaration to recognise the fundamental role of libraries in pursuing the sustainable development goals. Primarly, Iibraries are key actors for the targets regarding the freedom of access to information as an instrument of personal development and social equality through culture and technologies.
Luiss is a member of RUS (Italian University Network for Sustainable Development) and places the topic of sustainability firmly at the centre of its Strategic Plan through the definition within the Sustainability Plan of concrete actions aimed at achieving the 2030 Agenda SDGs.
From this perspective, the Library provides different bibliografical research paths for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through the Luiss Library Discovery and promotes a constantly updated collection of open access institutional sources in the Related Resources section.
